Labor history

The origins of craftsmanship

The legendary Garden of the Mountain Spirit, located at the foot of Sněžka, was already visited by the first Krkonoše settlers, who made concoctions from local herbs. The oldest image of herbalists comes from a map of Karkonosze by Simon Hüttel from 1578.

In 1696, Karpacz had 57 houses, about 40 of which were inhabited by independent laborers. Even then, they used more than 130 different herbs and minerals to create medicinal extracts, ointments and tinctures. Their elixirs helped with headaches, lung diseases and even rheumatic ailments.

Recipe secrets
Laborers vs. pharmacists

Over time, the apothecaries, backed by the authorities, began to fight against the laborers. Among other things, they accused them of practicing black magic. In the 19th century, laborers lost their privileges, and their tradition began to disappear.

The last representative of this profession was Ernst August Zölfel, who lived and worked in Karpacz until his death in 1884. Today his house has become a place where we revive old traditions, creating a Living Museum for you.
